The Green Fire Tetra (Aphyocharax rathbuni) is a species of tetra indigenous to South America. This species is primarily shimmery green, with a bright red tail base. The red spreads along the underside of the fish, stopping at its belly. These fish gain red and white fins as it matures, giving it a very distinct appearance.

This species of tetra is suitable for most beginners and is relatively undemanding to keep. They grow up to 2" in length, making them suitable for aquariums 10-gallons or larger. Because the Green Fire Tetra is a shoaling species, they must be kept in groups of 3 or more. These fish require a water temperature between 73-79 degrees Fahrenheit, and a pH between 6.5-7.0. When well-cared or, these fish will live for 4 years on average.

The Green Fire Tetra is very easy to feed. While they will eagerly eat most brands of commercially available fish flake or small pellet, we recommend mixing in high-quality protein sources such as frozen, freeze-dried, or live foods (such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, or tubifex worms). As the Green Fire Tetra is a carnivore, it will look and feel its best on a diet high in animal proteins.

This fish species is docile and suitable for almost any community aquarium.
