The Pearl Gourami (Trichopodus leerii) is a medium-sized gourami species from Thailand and Malaysia. This gourami is characterized by their long bodies, long tendril-like ventral fins, and a body covered in white and brown scales. They have a black stripe along their bodies traveling from their nose towards their tails.
This species of fish is very hardy and easy to care for. The minimum aquarium size for a Pearl Gourami is 20 gallons., and these fish do best in water temperature between 77-80 degrees Fahrenheit. They also prefer water that is slightly more acidic (pH of 5.5-6.5), but will adapt to neutral water as well.
Pearl Gourami are omnivores, and will readily eat any flake, pellet, frozen, freeze-dried, or live food that you offer. It is always recommended to alternate the food you provide your fish; variety prevents boredom and promotes better health and colouration.
These gourami species can live in a community aquarium with very little issue. They are not aggressive and generally do well with small schooling fish. It is not recommended to keep male Pearl Gourami together, as they get territorial with other male gourami species. It is also not recommended to keep them with any fish that may be prone to nipping, as Pearl Gourami will be targeted.
