Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) is a long, bushy aquatic plant. These plants are beginner-friendly, easy to grow and propagate, and provides many hiding places for small fish and shrimp.
This plant may be planted in the gravel, anchored to surfaces, or grow free-floating.
While all plants oxygenate the water, hornwort has the added benefit of suppressing the growth of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria).
This plant can be grown in a wide variety of temperatures, from the mid-50's to mid-80's. These plants require at least moderate lighting and tend to do poorly in low light. Growth is accelerated in high-light, as well as warm water. The use of an aquarium-safe fertilizer is recommended, as hornwort will deplete your water of nutrients as it grows.
