The Bolivian Ram (Mikrogeophagus altispinosa) is a species of South American dwarf cichlid, well-known for its peaceful demeanor.

These little cichlids are appropriate for the intermediate aquarium keeper and make very intelligent, interesting pets. On average, a Bolivian ram will live for 4 years and grow to up to 3.5" in length. A single ram needs a 30-gallon aquarium, with an additional 5 gallons for each additional ram.

Bolivian Rams require a water temperature between 73-79 degrees Fahrenheit and a pH between 6.5-7.5. These fish will adapt to water with a neutral pH, but they do prefer slightly acidic water. Their natural habitats include slow-moving, well-oxygenated streams with plenty of live plants to hide in.

This species of cichlid is not picky and will accept most foods. They do best on sinking foods, such as pellets, wafers, and frozen foods. Variety is always important to the health of the animal; the more variety the better.

One of the reasons these fish are so appealing is their docile disposition. They tend to keep to themselves and will struggle to live with semi-aggressive or aggressive tankmates. They can be kept with nearly all peaceful community fish species. Make sure these fish have areas to hide if they feel overwhelmed.
