The Black Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is a mutation of angelfish that has a totally black body. The fins are long and thin with delicate-looking webbing, and will typically extend past the length of the body. These juvenile specimens are approx. 4 inches long.

These animals grow to be quite large (up to 7 inches in length), and can live for up to a decade. They prefer a well-planted tank of at least 30 gallons with soft, slightly acidic water. Their preferred temperature range is between 76-82 degrees Fahrenheit, and their preferred pH range is 6.5-7.5.

These animals will become more aggressive as they grow. They can be kept with other angelfish, some smaller South American cichlid species, and large tetra species. Always check the compatibility of the animals you have with the animals you plan on adding to your aquarium. Any very small fish or shrimp will be eaten by the angelfish. Do not keep them with any aggressive fast species, as angelfish can become targets for fin-nipping.
