Live Mammal Sales Policy: We at Menagerie care about our animals. Before we can send a small pet to its forever home, we require potential owners to have an over-the-phone conversation with one of our small animal experts. It's our responsibility to ensure that customers fully understand the required care, maintenance, diet, and habitat for each individual animal. We look forward to your call. 416-972-6488
The Chinese Dwarf Hamster (Cricetus griseus) is a small, brown rodent with a long, slender body, cream belly, and a dark stripe down its back. These hamsters have slightly longer tails than other dwarf hamster species.
These hamsters stay smaller than the average Syrian hamsters, generally growing to 4 inches in length. The lifespan of these hamsters is 2-3 years on average.
We recommend an enclosure at least 24" by 12" by 12" to comfortably house this hamster for its entire lifespan. They spend most of their waking house running for exercise, so aim to provide as much space as you can afford. If keeping this animal in a cage, make sure the bar spacing is small, otherwise, the hamster will be able to escape.
Large bins, terrariums, or aquariums are generally recommended over cages for this species. This animal requires a wheel to get proper exercise. You must supply a wheel that is at LEAST 6.5" across. If your enclosure cannot fit a 6.5" wheel, it is TOO SMALL.
