The Dwarf Pufferfish (Carinotetraodon travancoricus), also called the "pea pufferfish", is the smallest species of freshwater pufferfish. These tiny pufferfish have yellow bodies with distinct black spots.

Dwarf pufferfish stay very little, generally getting 1" long. Due to their little size, dwarf pufferfish can easily live in a 5-gallon aquarium. Any additional pufferfish will require an additional 5 gallons of space. While they are not fast swimmers, they are still very active and intelligent fish. This said; being able to provide enrichment in the aquarium from additions such as plants and caves is important. Dwarf pufferfish live for 4 years on average.

Dwarf pufferfish do best in water temperatures from the low-70's to low-80's. They do very poorly in acidic water, so it's important to make sure the water you're using is neutral (they can tolerate slightly basic water well).

These fish will not eat flakes or pellets consistently. Dwarf pufferfish are carnivores, and will readily eat frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They will also go after any live snails in your aquarium and are considered effective snail hunters. These fish should be fed small amounts of food twice a day.

It is preferred that dwarf puffers be kept exclusively with other pea puffers. Dwarf puffers are known to be nippy and aggressive towards other fish species. The best animals to keep with dwarf pufferfish, besides other dwarf pufferfish, are small and fast fish such as danios, neon tetra, ember tetra, and siamese algae eaters.
