Serpae tetra (Hyphessobrycon eques) is a colourful tetra species. They are primarily red with a black spot on both sides of their bodies and have fins that showcase black, white, and red colours. They grow to a little under 2 inches, and can live 5+ years in captivity.
These animals do best with temperatures ranging from 72F-79F. They're a shoaling species that should be kept in groups of 3 or more, and should have a minimum of 20 gallons of swimming space.
They are easy to care for and can be housed with other small semi-aggressive fish, such as most large tetra species, barbs, and angelfish. They have a tendency to pick on smaller fish and nip at fish with long fins, but larger shoals tend to decrease their aggression.
